Blakely N. Scott, the son of the late Lillie Mae
Neal Scott and the late Blakely
Scott, Jr., is a native of
Columbia, S.C.
He is a product of the
public school system of
Columbia, a graduate of Palmer
College, The University of South
Carolina, Morris College School
of Religion, and The Lutheran
Theological Southern Seminary.
He was presented the Doctor of
Divinity Degree by Morris
College in May of 1993.
He began his pastoral
tenure at Mount Moriah Baptist
Church in August of 1978 and at
the First Nazareth Baptist
Church, Columbia in July of
1979. In addition to his
pastoral responsibilities, he is
Moderator of the Midlands
Baptist Association, Inc.; an
Instructor in the Morris College
School of Religion Extension
Program; and a member of the
Board of Trustees of Morris
College.
In May of 1998 he retired
from Benedict College where he
began in 1979 as Assistant
Director of Auxiliary Services,
later as College Minister, and
then as an Instructor of
Religion and Philosophy. He
served as Moderator of the
Wateree Baptist Association ‑
Upper Division from 1982 -
January, 2000, Dean of the Young
People's Christian Assembly ‑
Benedict College from 1985 -
2001, Assistant Secretary and
Secretary of the Gethsemane
Baptist Association, and Pastor
of the Zion Mill Creek Baptist
Church from January, 1976 -
June, 1979. He has served on the
Hospice board of the Baptist
Medical Center; the Community
Care, Inc. Board; the Connie
Maxwell Children’s Home advisory
board ‑ Greenwood, SC; and the
Columbia Housing Development
Corporation board.
He is a Mason, a member
of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity,
Inc., and Alpha Phi Omega
National Service Fraternity.
He was selected as one of
the Outstanding Young Men of
America for the years 1980 and
1982, presented the "Living the
Legacy Award" by the National
Council of Negro Women in 1982,
listed in Who's Who in the South
and Southeast for the year 1986,
selected as "The Business
Associate of the Year" by the
American Business Women
Association ‑ Columbia, S.C.
Chapter for the year 1987, the
Midlands Chapter in 1998,
he is also
listed in Who's Who in Religion
for the year 1991, was presented
“The Lifetime Achievement Award”
by Carolina Scholarships, Inc.
in 2003, was inducted into
Columbia Housing Authority’s
Wall of Fame in 2004, was given
the Key to The City of Columbia
in 2004, and was presented with
the Order of the Palmetto by the
Governor of SC in 2004.
He is married to the former Mary Brooks and they
are the proud parents of two
daughters, Mina S. Barnes and
M'Lilian L. Scott and they also
have one grandson, James Blakely
Scott Barnes.
He uses as his motto text for life from Proverbs
3:5 & 7:
"Trust in the Lord with
all thine heart;
and lean not unto thine
own understanding.
In all thy ways
acknowledge Him,
and He shall direct thy
paths."
He also gives God the glory and honor for all of
the positives and
accomplishments in his life by
embracing the essence of Psalm
118:23
This is the LORD's doing;
it is marvellous in our eyes.”
